Capacitors Old vs New

I am working on a Philco 53-1750 radio/phono with dryed out old electrolytic caps. One of them is a .0047uf/600vdc can I replace it with a .0047uf 1kV orange drop?

The Orange Drop caps are very good quality and will work. As long as the voltage rating is equal to or greater than the original it will be ok.

One thing, these are not the electrolytic filter caps. The electrolytic caps will have ratings like 10 mfd 450 volts. They will not have a decimal point in front of the value.

Kevin-

The wax covered cylindrical capacitors are made of paper and foil. These really small values (one or more zeros before the digits) may not need to be replaced unless they show signs of melting, bubbling, or discoloration. However, I prefer to replace them with 1000V Ceramic disk caps, that you can get pretty cheap through MCM Electronics. You can order a free catalog from them at their website. A lack of melting, bubbling, or discoloration is not necessarily an indication that the
capacitor is good. It can have low internal resistance (high leakage) and show none of
these outwardly signs. In a set this old, it is a good bet that most if not all paper
caps are out of specs on internal resistance.

Hi Jimmy

Sure you can use a cap rated at 1000 volts to replace one rated 600 volts. However this cap is not an electrolytic. Electrolytic cap values usually are 1 mfd and higher.
