FADA 361 Worked great but now static
3/9/2012 8:14:33 PMGreg
Hi All,

Need a little help here. I recapped this radio about a year ago. The radio worked fine. I placed it aside to work on the cabinet. I finally go the cabinet done. I pulled out the guts to make sure everything was still good. Now I only get 1 faint station and a lot of static which sounds like a deisel truck motor. The static changes when the tuner moves.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks
Greg

Could be a dirty band switch, or the antenna coil. Check coil for continuity and connections. Also the coils chassis ground connections.

Thanks Warren. I am looking at the schematic for a FADA 361 and am seeing a different wiring of the radio. Same tube line up but there are definately some variations. I'm not sure if someone tried to rewire this or there is another schematic for the 361K. Wondering if anyone out there might be familiar with this model.

Thanks
Greg

I also wanted to add the schematic calls out pins 4 & 5 of tube 6Q7G being connected. There are not connected together on the set.

Pins 4 and 5 on the 6Q7 are duel diodes. Only one diode is needed for detection. The other diode can be tied into the AVC line. This could be a production change, and it’s a common circuit in a lot of AA5 radios.

Check all your solder connections again.
It isn't likely that any components have failed, (although it is possible, if there are any remaining rolled paper caps). But a bit of tarnish on a poor connection could be the culprit.

I rewired per the 361 schematic. I get continuity on all coils. Still the same problem. I will recheck all solder joints now. This one is a tuffy..!

The static you hear when turning the tuner, could be something shorting between the tuner gangs. or a bent gang. Look carefully between the gangs of the tuner, both oscillator and antenna side with a magnifier and a light shining though it.

Hi Greg

Any chance you have outside interference? Is the radio near your computer? Any battery charger or other electrical device?

Does static go down with volume setting? Try grounding antenna to chassis. If outside interference this should eliminate or greatly reduce the noise.

I can not operate an AM radio within 10 feet of my computer without bad interference.

Warren, John and Norman,

Turns out my computer and wireless printer were the problem. Unplugged them both and the radio works fine. Thank you all for your help.! All is right with the world again!!!!! :-)
