Peeling paint on dial glass
3/7/2012 1:08:20 PMEdM
On glass dial plates where the paint has began to blister / pull loose from the glass. Anyone know of a way to stabalize, so paint does not continue to loosen and flake off? Spray with clear lacquer? Dab on clear finger nail polish? Anybody have any ideas, or has done anything that works? I did make a high-quality copy at an office supply store, which looks fairly authentic when laminated with laminating sheets, and then placed between two thin pieces of clear polycarbonate plastic. But I would like to use the original. Thanks, EdM

EdM,
I wouldn't recommend lacquer or finger nail polish. Either would soften/dissolve the lettering (probably enamel) I've been able to re-create a few rather complex dial plates using my PC and clear water slide decals, and hopefully you have made a full size scanned copy. White lettering/lines will be the only problem. Even a delicate touch and small brush with white paint could be disapointing.

EdM,
Here is another idea. If most of the dial paint is still intact, and you insist on using it, a small sheet of clear water slide decal material, overlayed onto the existing dial might salvage it, but I've had difficulty and flaking with some dials using plain water. This assumes silkscreen paint is on back side. If you try this method, would suggest deionized or distilled water for the decal soak. RADIO DAZE has just announced a new service for duplicating some of these old dials, if a replacement is necessary.
