Hello All,
I'm going to have to replace the battery wires in this set (cracked insulation) and they are something like 8 gauge. Huge stuff. I don't own a soldering iron that can get that hot. I have always wanted one but could never find one. I tried the Weller soldering gun (dual heat) and it wont get hot enough. Can someone suggest one that will work for soldering heavy gauge wires to chassis that's not too expensive. I don't need it that often. Maybe there's one at Harbor Freight Tools?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
A big 100W cold chisel type(old style) would do the job if you can find one, otherwise a butane micro-torch comes to mind, and if used properly won't ignite the insulation.

Try with your hottest pencil iron along with your soldering gun. The heat from both of them together may be able to to the job.

I have used a 'micro-torch' before, mine is similar to this:

They run on butane and work well for larger stuff.
