Chassis material
1/23/2012 4:48:33 PMVinny
Greetings, what is the material that these chassis are made of? Are they stainless steel, galvanized steel, etc?
I want to try a product called weiman instant tarnish remover to clean. The product does say not to use on stainless steel.
Thank you,
Vinny

Most common material seems to be thin gauge stamped sheet metal (steel)

Here's a tip on how to get rid of the rust (the method I myself prefer):

Dennis, thanks for responding. There is no rust and I was using Weiman silver polish among others and it was coming out good, but with a lot of elbow grease and in tight spaces. I was just wondering if I should cut out some of that elbow grease and use the "instant tarnish remover" by Weiman then the polish. It's an American Bosch 595P which the chassis will be viewed easily.
Thank you,
Vinny

Dennis, this brings up another question about rust. In the same radio
there is a transformer with a bit of rust on it. After using the naval jelly to remove the rust, do you prep the surface with anything else before painting?

I usually paint with automotive type spray paints......"Duplicolor" is the brand I use. Duplicolor also offers a primer ..... I buy the gray primer and use that on the bare metal first.

Sometimes, on a really nasty chassis, I will prime, then paint with "hammered finish" silver paint which is made by Rustoleum. I mask large objects/areas with blue painters tape. The smaller areas, such as rivets etc., I mask by "painting" them with rubber cement, which is easily removed later on.

Here's a photo of a chassis that was spray painted with Rustoleum "Hammered Finish".....all rubber cement and painter's tape masking was removed just prior to the photo being taken.

It should be noted that I only paint a chassis if it is in horrible shape due to heavy rust / corrosion / discoloration. The majority of the time, Naval Jelly will be sufficient remove grime, light rust and corrosion and will leave the metal looking clean and bright.

For sure, there are a myriad of products available that can do the job.............everyone has their favorite.

Dennis, photo looks pretty good, nice work. I have read somewhere to keep naval jelly off the If cans?
The product I tried really did nothing to the chassis except made it cleaner.
My very own method that seems to work best for me is clorox 2 for the initial cleaning and then the metal polish. It really does the job well and leaves the chassis very shiny but with work. There appears to be a very dark chemical reaction as soon as you put the polish on the chassis, then it just wipes off and buffs really beautifully. I will post a photo when I can.
Thanks for your input,
Vinny A.
