Hello group. Somebody here knows the answer to this question.
I got a nice birthday present, an unpainted Bakelite Zenith 5G03 'Owl Eyes' clock radio. The seller said the clock works and the radio does not. No problem then. :) This cabinet is in great undamaged condition and the radio is complete. I want to clean the chassis and recap it. I have repaired a couple of RCA clock radios,as well as a GE and a Westinghouse Risemaster. Getting the clock out of the chassis can be a real challenge. I recall having a similar problem with one of those, ended up not removing the clock.
On this Zenith, the two lower clock knobs are friction fit on split shafts, but the top knob is different. I found an ebay pic of this radio missing the top knob, and the shaft appears to have a rounded end.
Is the upper rod threaded? Or do you remove it by popping off a split ring on the back end of the shaft?

I have the same clock in a G.E. radio. The alarm set knob you would pull to set. This knob is threaded on. To remove this knob, pull as to set. Grab shaft with needle nose pliers. Unscrew knob.

Forgot to say this knob is reverse thread.

Great. Thanks, Warren. That explains why we see them broken off, too.
This radio really ties my little collection together. I can put my four unpainted Bakelites on one side, two clock radios on the other side, and a couple of Zeniths below.
