Adding frequency counter jack to Eico 324?
1/15/2012 11:13:55 AMScott
My micronta hand held frequency counter works ok connecting to RF signal generator using the alligator clips from SG test lead. It is kind of tedious when you are aligning various frequencies. I would like to add a connector and hard wire to eico chassis but not sure if this would distort signal. Anyone have success or recommendations on this issue?
Thanks for any advice.

Adding a BNC connector should be easy, and work fine. I replaced the original mic output connector in my 324 with a BNC - the original mounting hole is fine. If I understand you correctly, you can add a second BNC connector in parallel - either with the original mic connector or a BNC replacement.

Thanks Doug. I will give it a try. Thought maybe with connectors in parallel that the combined resistance would distort signal. Also concerned with voltage potentially coming back through counter. I will do some experimenting.

I don't think that will be a problem. If you look at the 324's schematic, there is a 1000-pF coupling capacitor that isolates the connector from the internals of the signal generator ckt.

I bought a used 324 and have not fired it up yet. Are these like old radios and should be recapped before using them?

Tom.....
My guess is you will have to change out the Ecaps at the very least. The one I bought was pretty olb/beat so I replaced all the old caps and out of spec resistors. It does a nice job now and really liked the fact that you can tune the coils to improve accuracy of signal.

By the way - if you have a digital shortwave radio, you can use that to check the calibration of a signal generator. No physical connection required.
