GE H-77

I've been away for awhile. I had a concussion and some lingering effects and pretty much gave up working on radios.
However a really nice GE H-77 fell into my hands. Everything looks good, although I had to do some refinishing on the top. The audio section works great, especially through the 10" speaker. But it don' get no stations. I've checked all of the switches and they seem okay. I replaced the filter caps and did some work around the 6SA7. I replaced two caps to the coil and a 22K resistor. I posted this on ARF and haven't got any good suggestions. I should have come straight here. I have an RF generator, signal tracer, scope, etc. All of the tubes test good. The set passes a tone from the signal generator. I suspect the oscillator section, but I get confused easily, (nothing new there), and the thing is full of switches and coils. This set is beautiful and makes a great display in my living room. I'd really like to get it cranking.

In other words-
Help!

If your radio does pass the IF signal from the input of the 6SA7. The oscillator would be suspect. Check for a negative voltage on pin 5 of the 6SA7 in the AM position. All of the switched oscillator coils share the same ground. Test the connections though the coils and switches for continuity.

Whew! Glad that's over. Where were we...

I have -5.23 volts at pin 5 of the 6SA7. I pulled the antenna coil and checked all of the windings. I also replaced the 22K resistor and the two ground caps to the coil. I've checked the continuity of the switches in the AM position. Everything looks good.
Tomorrow I'm going to use the signal generator and scope to follow the service notes in the "Elements of radio Servicing" handbook. At the end of each chapter it gives tests for that section. Since everything from the volume control to the speaker is good that eliminates the audio section. I'm going back from the detector through the IF sections. Somewhere between that and the antenna is the problem. Duh! It would appear that the Osc is working since I have the correct bias voltage at the 6SA7 and and a modulated audio signal passes through the set. My goal tomorrow is to get the set running even if I have to heat glass and blow my own tubes.
(I hope it doesn't come to that.)

More later-
Thanks.
Terry
