: : : : ![]() : : : : : : : :Sir Martin . . . . . : : :I always just gave them the same treatment as the Standard -Kollsman TV tuners of that time frame. : : :Initially degresae all contacts of WHATEVER pookie residues , that was used on it BEFORE. : : :Then use an eraser . . . Red Ruby . . . or a stick typewriter eraser if areas are being stubborn . . . to get the oxide off from all contacts as well as the main fixed mating contact springs engaging into them as the drum is rotated. : : :Then I would put a thin film of Dow Corning #Z5 silicone grease on all of them . . . .or . . . "plumbers" silicone grease from a fully stocked Ace Hardware store . . .or . . .Silicone stopcock grease . . . ( if you are a chemist.) : : :That is being mainly for protection to preclude an easy onset of any oxidation again . . .moreso than its anti friction capabilities, which other media can excell in . . . MoS2 . . . to wit, but DON'T use that. : : :BUT you might use MoS2 ( Molybdniu-yum-yum Disulfide )on the roller detents and the other strictly mechanical aspices of the tuner drums rotation. : : :ASIDE: :At NASA upon the entry of some newbies, one of my exacting demos of Z5 not being lost, sagging off or vaporized away with time related temperatures, was to have a quality common clear petroleum based lube and take out about the size of an English pea sample, with the tip of a pocket screwdriver. : : :A propane torch's flame was brought up to it and ZZZZ-IIIII-PPPP, within a flash, all is gone. : : :A like sample of Z5 is dipped out and the applied torch seems to be having no problems at all, with the WHOLE blob even taking on a cherry glow shortly. : : :That was the timing clue to set the torch cannister down and take my right index finger and lift off some of the top of the red blob and spread it across the index, middle and ring fingers of my left hand. : : :(Them, being some what desensitized by surfactal callousing . . . . from decades of pulling HOT vacuum tubes.) :Now, that specific demo and the praise of silicone grease almost invariably, never failed to draw out some drop jawed and awed . . gaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhdammmmmms . . from the spectators. : : :Plus, it instilled in their minds the effectiveness of silicone grease . . . . possibly, excepting its loss when exposed in a desert, dusty atmosphere and its creeping away to the side or falling off in dust encrustments. : : :Thasssittt . . . : : : :73's de Edd : : : : :The speed of time is one second per second. : : : : ![]() : : : |
