Hello all..I have a Philco 39 that I got for $20 at a Value Village store, pretty good deal,You can see this radio and hear it howling on my Youtube channel: Thermionman 1970 /" If I only had the 3 missing tube shields would it work"....I t actually sounds cool like a thereimin.Anyways I was told there is no way that the radio should howl like this because of missing shields and that it is likely a bad interstage transformer or capacitor etc...However If I place my hands on or near the radio tubes it comes in fine as seen in the video ...Also shortwave bands don't howl....Anyone know if it is shield problem or not.Oh the 6Q7 tube is a metal tube so shielding should not be a problem with that one.....

Metal tubes usually have the shell connected to pin 1 (I've never checked to see if this is true for all metal tubes) - in order for the tube to be properly shielded - pin 1 in the tube socket must be grounded - if the radio didn't originally use metal tubes it very well may have pin 1 unconnected - I've seen this in a number of radios - From what you've demonstrated - tube shields would solve the problem - but If you suspect even remotely that you might have bad caps - why wouldn't you change them out ? Recapping a radio these days is extremely cheap. All the info you need is contained in this forum and others - a simple search will find all of the How to's

Hello..Thanks Rogers Flipdial for your reply.Yes I will check the 6Q7 metal tube pin 1 for grounding.I actually put some new electrolytics in but like you said I will replace alot more capacitors and any out of tolerance resistors etc... in the near future. I need a lower wattage iron with smalle tip that doesn't melt everything else for smaller components.
