Zenith 7s 558

I need some help with a Zenith console I'm trying to fix up. The chassis number is 7A02. It's been recaped and has had several of its resistors replaced. It is missing its original speaker. The radio is currently working and is sensitive across the dial. I am testing it with a small 5 inch PM speaker and the volumn is not what it should be for a 7 tube Zenith. I would like to find another larger 8 or 10 inch PM speaker to put in it until I run across an original. Could the speaker cause the volumn to be lower or should I be looking further in the output section. I've tried to order an 8 inch speaker through Radio Daze but they are back ordered and have no idea when they will be available. I would appreciate suggestions on an appropriate PM speaker I could put on the set along with suggestions on where I could get one other than Radio Daze. Thanks for any suggestions and for all the help this forum has been in the past. Al

Hi, did your old speaker have a field coil? ( 2 wires that wrap around where the magnet would be on a PM?) If it did you have to put in some power resistors or even a choke to make up the resistance. It looks like you need a 1250 ohm resistance. A filter choke followed by a resistor would probably be the ticket. I see Radio Daze has a 1025 filter choke and a 220 power resistor should get you in the ball park. Good Luck, George T

Hi George: I appreciate your help and suggestions. Just for the sake of testing the radio I am using a 1500 ohm 10 watt ceramic resistor in place of the field coil. It seems to work fine, however, the volume is perhaps 60% of what I would estimate it would normally be in this model Zenith. I'm looking for a larger 8 to 12 inch PM speaker to use in the set. I've tried to find one through Nostaligia Air but they do not have any in stock and could not give me a date on when they thought they might have some available. I'm looking for another source of a PM speaker that I can use. Thanks. Al

Hi, you can find them all day long on ebay. I just won a PM 15" for $10.50 plus 20.00 shipping, for a Zenith console I'm working on. I've gotten a few off of ebay and they all have worked fine. Just do a search in all catagories for 15" speaker. I got one a little while back that was the exact replacement for the set I was working on, and didn't pay much at all for it. Good Luck, George T.

Hi George F: I would be interested. Do you have a picture you could send to my e-mail address? How much would you be asking? Thanks. Al
