Emerson Radio Model 108

Just bought this radio for $5.00. Decided I wanted a new hobby. I'm in the process of reading the schematics and all the good advice on the internet on how to restore. The first thing I'm doing is replacing all the paper capacitors. And the power cord. I have one tube that the ends are burned or melted on 3 of the pins. The paper caps, all but a few are from .o1 to .9 - 200volts. All the replacement caps show to be in the 600 volt range. Are those interchangeable? I need to have the speaker cone replaced also because of a couple of slits. Any suggestions for a beginner?

The 600 volt rating is common for the replacement capacitors. You can use them for your radio. Also the new capacitors most are non-polarized. The speaker cone if only has tears in it, can be patched with like coffee filter paper and rubber cement.

Warren, please be carefull here, this radio may have a line resistance cord usually around 140-150 0hms replacing it with a regular cord will require that a resistor needs to be added look over the schematic very carefully.

Looking at the schematic for the Emerson 108. This one does have the resistor line cord, and a tap for the dial lamp. There is basically three ways to modify the set to use a regular AC line cord. See this link and at the bottom of the page there is a .zip file with a spreadsheet that does the entire math for you.

To make the dial lamp work. Lift the heater connection at the last tube in the series going back to the AC line. (75) Add the dial lamp is series from the lifted heater wire and back to the 75 heater pin. Shunt the dial lamp with a 47 ohm 1 watt resistor and use a 44 light bulb.
