Very noisy phono cartridge(newly rebuilt)
9/6/2011 10:51:13 AMDave F
Hello everyone. I just had an astatic crystal cartridge rebuilt with a sapphire tip needle. The surface noise is extremely loud, more than normal on a 78 record. It drowns out the music. Any suggestions on how to cut it down?

Sounds as if you have the wrong needle in it. The surface noise could be due to the wrong diameter needle riding low in the record grove.

I think the ouptut is too high somehow. The radio/phono is a former "beam of light" philco that was "converted" to crystal pickup. Now that the cartridge is rebuilt, I have these problems. The old system has a transformer with it which was removed when it was converted. Perhaps the amplifier needs some modification for the new cartridge?

Dave,
I did the same for a missing BOL changer on a Philco 42-1008. Installed a later model Philco changer instead, but modified the input interface to terminate the cartridge properly.

Wouldn't a sapphire needle be the one to fit in there? It is an "s" shaped steel needle with a fine tip. If not, what would you recommend, it has a set screw on the cartridge.

A diamond tip needle would be the one to use. The sapphire ones wear out fast. Also the diameter of the needle tip is larger for the 78 grooves. You can research this on the web.

Are there diamond tip needles that are "s" shaped for a set screw cartridge?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their feedback, It turned out that when I replaced the needle with another "s" shaped sapphire, with a slightly different angle to it, it works fine now. I was suprised that the angle of the needle could make such a difference. Problem solved.
