Major screw-up!!
8/15/2011 5:19:39 PMTerry Decker
I have this Atwater Kent model 30. It is, (or was). beautiful. However it had some old dirt that marred the faceplate paint job. Stupid me- I thought I'd clean some of the dirt off with acetone.
DUH! Huge mistake!! (My mind was thinking of something else. No, not that. Okay, it was that).
Now I have a horrible spot in the upper left hand corner where the paint used to be.
Obviously I have to remove everything and repaint the whole thing. but what kind of paint should I use to approximate the original finish.
(My butt is SO sore my kicking myself)
Thanks for any suggesions.

Is that one of the painted metal cabnets? Antique radio supply sells the wrinkle paint in two or three differant colors. If one is not the correct color just get the wrinkle finish to look right and then paint with the correct color of not wrinkle paint. test first to make sure the second type paint does not damage the first coat. I did this before on a 37 Cadillac radio I restored.

Related issue: I've read that AK escutcheons and decorative plates are actually thinly plated with gold - don't try to polish.

Wow! It worked. It's usually a toss up whether posting a photo will work.

Anyway, now there's a quarter sized bare spot in the upper left hand corner. I'm so mad at myself. As you can see, this is in excellent condition. It even works.
Damn!

Front panel really isn't a wrinkle finish on these battery radios. You will most likely need to repaint the panel since color is hard to match. Use dark brown and add some lamp black if still too light.

Then lighty spray the panel with Krylon Crystal Clear misting it on. It should be almost dry when it hits the panel.

There are many other ways but I've had good results doing it like this.

Thanks Norm. Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured. I'll have to carefully mask the stuff that won't come off, most of which is tiny.
I'm so mad at myself. The LAST thing I need is another project. I'm still catching up on the stuff that piled up while I was out of it. I have a spray called 'camouflage', but it's really a dark brown. I figure I'll try it first. If it doesn't work, it'll be a nice primer.
Ya gotta admit though, it is a nice looking radio.
