It is for the "Burst Gate Amplifier", which is responsible for synchronizing the color signal. The usual color burst signal in a video signal are 8 cycles of the 3.58Mhz of the Chroma carrier frequency. Essentially it allows for recreating the color carrier frequency in synchronization with the transmitter.
The adjustment allows for compensation in circumstances of attenuated signals, or component value shifts.
At a minimum setting, you should lose the color signal, or most of it, and at maximum it should present noise along the right side of the screen, along with potentialy retrace lines. Ideally it should be adjusted so that the burst signal overcomes the bias from the horizontal sweep output transformer on the grid of the "keyer" tube during the blanking cycle.
: anybody know what a "burst gain control" is supposed to do on back of my set? Sams docs say it was added late in production but other than that no mention of what it's supposed to do or any mention of it in the alignment instructions or schematics. This is NOT the color killer adjustment but a separate burst control. Thank you.

I tried it out and I see only a slight increase in the intensity of the color and brightness at the high end vs. low end but that's it. (otherwise set is recapped and works great). Then again I don't think I have the color killer set at it's cutoff point since I don't care if the snow is colored or not! :) maybe will adjust that first then try this control again. For now I just left it at the minimum setting. I love how they added the control but neglected to cut a hole for it in the back cover!
By the sound of it I don't need to bother drilling one either...thanks!....Mark
