Zenith 8s154 sound quality

When I try to play this radio at a low volume setting, i get a lot of distortion in the sound quality.

Turning up the volume past 4 on the scale improves it greatly. I like using it at night and want the low volume setting so I dont wake up anyone.

Is this normal for these sets? All caps are replaced and resistors were changed out if out of tolerance. I plays excellent at higher vols.

The sound is also scratchy when going through the low settings until I get past them, making me wonder if the volume control is worn.

How should I test it? I did ohm it out when restoring it, but cant really tell from what I saw. How should you expect the meter to read in a case like this or on any volume control? I checked end to end and end to center tap. The resistance changed as I moved the knob as I would expect it to, but it was hard to read small resistance increments. I used a DVM.

Thanks for your help.

Sometimes the speaker voice coil is rubbing on the pole piece. This is more noticeable at low volume. With the radio off, push gently on the center of the speaker cone. Listen to what you hear. If you do hear a rubbing sound there are ways to repair this. The volume control may just need a good cleaning. You can give it a good flush with rubbing alcohol. Rotate the control a bunch of times. Let it totally dry. This too can sometimes be repaired if that does not help.
