Wards Airline 04BR-514A

I am having a problem with a Wards Airline model 04BR-514a.

When I dial down to frequency below 680, I have nothing but noise and at one spot motor boating.

I have replaced the caps and the plate and grid voltages are within range. I have checked the plates on the variable capacitor and it seems to be ok. Only the small side of the variable capacitor has an adjustment screw and that has not helped.

Any suggestions. Thanks L Doty

Is the antenna placed near the radio's circuitry? Do stations fall where they should for the most part? I have found that in radios that have the antenna mounted close to the circuitry, and perhaps aren't aligned correctly (either the IF is high, or the radio tunes down farther than it should), oscillation will take place near the IF frequency.

You say:
"Only the small side of the variable capacitor has an adjustment screw and that has not helped. "

That's an important screw.

It tweaks the local oscillator frequency.
You just can't turn it willy-nilly to hope the motor-boating stops.

That trimmer should be adjusted to get the local osc at a frequency exactly 455kc above the station that is tuned-in.

Try following the written alignment steps for your radio again ...but very carefully.

Or try to use a freq counter to help.

If you have a radio station near by operating at 770kc as an example... when you have that station "tuned-in" the local oscillator should be at 1225kc

Hi

Here is a schematic:

Except for 35L6 and 35Z5 are all other tubes metal? If not are they shielded.
