Victor R7A chassis with 47 tube output
4/20/2011 3:13:01 AMChris (thermionman1970)
Hello to all.I recently aquired an RCA VICTOR R7A chassis .I really like this chassis because it is tall and boxy and has huge 47 output tubes and a cool looking Mershon copper electrolytic capacitor etc.You can see this chassis on my Youtube.com site (Thermionman1970)Victor R7A . Anyways does anyone have one of these radios and can give me some info on it.The schematic for this radio is not very clear)First of all there is a large cardboard capacitor behind the Mershon cap with a wire coming out the top.???Does this wire go to the field coil???Is this a big paper capacitor or another polarized electrolytic?? I found a site on rebuilding Mershon caps but I heard that it is easy to damage them trying to get the top cap off of the capacitor. My idea is to stuff the tall cardboard cap with new capacitors( lots of room in there) and just leave the Mershon the way it is ,just disconnect it.Also I am 99 % sure the output transformer is in the square metal box on top of the chassis. Is this correct?I plan to hook the radio up to a permanent magnet speaker enclosure with a choke or resistor for field coil substitute) at least for now.If anyone has any info on this radio it would be helpful.

Sir Chris. . . . .

Possibly, it just looks like one of the very front "Meerschmaums" has already been replaced ?

(With it looking like its + connective wire is coming out of the top of a piece of EMT conduit /tubing .

Ref this photo of the rear output transformer-Rectangular housed capacitor bank, and those mentioned canned electrolytics.

As per the clarity of your found schematic . . .

Try on this Size 18EEEEE and see if it fits you any 'mo bettah'.

(Placed at very bottom)
