Hi

A friend, who is a radio collector, have an old 1913 tube
made by Marconi. We think that this tube is a Round type C valve
triode with indirect heated cathode and there is this information
write on it: CA-228 W.T.Co lte patente #28418-19 2V-PS-3F and B4 paint on it.
If you have the Book "Saga of the vacuum tubes" the tube he have look
the same as the one at page 207. Now, somebody have made a offer to him to acquire
his tube but after some hours of reseach on the NET I can't found any information
on this type of tube and we realy don't know what is a fair price for this kind of tube.
Can you please help us. This past weekend I also have take some pictures that I can send to anyone
who want to help us. We also found in is tubes boxes to realy special tubes with no indication
on them. One of this tube have liquid in it and the other a sort powder. I also take picture of those tubes
so if you want to help us to identify them it will be fun.
Thanks
Bonne journée

Hi Pascal, Since you haven't got any replies yet I'll start the ball rolling. First, if it's a 1913 or thereabouts Round tube it will be a directly heated filament, indirectly heated tubes didn't appear until more than 10 years later. It should have a glass extension on top (called a Pip) containing asbestos. This was heated by a skilled operator to adjust the gas in the tube for optimum operation, they were soft (gassy) tubes.
I guess the liquid in the other tube is Mercury, should be little globules or beads of silvery liquid. In that case it will be a Mercury vapor rectifier. I'm not sure what the powder is but it could be a tube that has a broken seal (cracked glass) allowing air in and the powder could be the oxidized getter material. It turns a milky white after exposure to air for a few hours, usually visible as a white coating inside the glass where the silvery gettering used to be but sometimes flakes off as a white powder. If it's not that I'm not sure what it is. If you go to Antique Radios online at http://www.antiqueradios.com/ you can post the pictures there in GIF or JPEG format in the photo gallery. You must give them a file name without any spaces to work. Then go to the forum (links at the top of page) and post your questions there in Antique Radio discussions. You should get some informed answers there. Don Black.
