A-K 60 Mystery
4/5/2011 10:01:52 PMJeff S.
I'm replacing the caps in an A-K 60. I pulled the filter condenser assembly can out after desoldering and marking all of the wires. I'm going to replace the can with a circuit board containing the appropriate value caps.

According to what's written on the schematic (AK Page 1-25), there is no value for pin 5 on the round assembly pin connector, but that's the pin that the detector filter resistor and detector coupling resistor connect to, and there should be a 1.0 mfd capacitor in there somewhere.

I believe that the information provided for the filter condsenser assembly on the schematic may be wrong in that the Detector Filter 1.0 mfd cap should be connected to pin 5, not pin 4. The detector filter capacitor doesn't appear to come anywhere close to everything pin 4 is connected to. If anyone out there is familiar with the AK 60, or has time to look at the schematic...do you agree with me?

Also, does anyone know of a suitable replacement or a source for a replacement leather(?) grommet on the tuning shaft. This one is all chewed up.

Thanks///Jeff S.

Hi Jeff

Good idea to replace the inside metal can with circuit board. You still have the outer cover.

You can find AK service data here:

http://www.atwaterkent.info/TechData/akSvcDataIndex.html

If there are questions compare the circuit to AK55 and AK70 which are similar.

You can use a piece of rubber fuel line for the tuner.

Thanks Norm! The service data had an actual diagram of the filter condenser assembly, and according to the diagram, I was right...pin 5 belongs to the detector filter condenser.

Another question for anyone familiar with the AK 60: What is the value of the "quality condenser" that is connected across the windings of the 2nd AF tranformer circuit? Also, where is it located? I can't find it under the chassis, so I'm afraid it's in the transformer can along with all that tar.

Thanks///Jeff

Here is a tuner repair kit.

http://www.adamsradio.com/page2.html

Or you could fabricate your own with a Neoprene faucet washer.

Thanks for the website info; I've never been to that one before. I made a replacement out of a piece of auto gas line. Works well!
