Band spread is really just a fine tunning. You would tune in a station with the main tuner, then rock the band spread to fine tune.

Dennis,

You might try Kenwood's site at www.kenwoodusa.com for a manual if you haven't already.

The R-300 is too old for any Kenwood factory support. You might try asking for a copy of an owners/service manual at eham, qth.net, radiobanter or other ham radio hobbist sites.
The bandspread scale may have to be positioned to a 'set' point in order to have the main tuning scale read accurately.

Tune in a broadcast station, it will be within a cycle or two of the assigned frequency. Zero the main tuning. Now,adjust the bandspread for max S-meter reading (strongest reception) Now the bandspread is set correctly. For SWLing (Short Wave Listening), I put the bandspread about in the middle and when I find an interesting station, I fine tune it with the bandspread.

Been a ham since 1973. For main tuning dial to read correctly, bandspread is usually set at 0 [zero] Band spread separates the staions when it appears 2 or 3 on same freq.
