Value of Auto-Lite Tiger capacitors
3/17/2011 10:04:28 AMJohn
I am trying to recap a Deforest Crosley 6D411 radio and two of the caps about 1 1/2" long are marked Auto-lite Tiger 38106. How can I find the value of these caps. I have no schematic.

Try using a schematic with the same tube line up as yours. They are probably common values.

Does your radio have a model "name" as well as a number displayed on it somewhere ? Something like METEOR, LYRA, MARS, CORONA, etc., etc. ?

Some of the DeForest entries in the early indexes are by model name rather than number.

The only other 6D411 I can come up with is a ZENITH.

The other model name is Aries. Small table model with tubes 1v, 77M, 41M, 88M.

Sorry John, I couldn't find anything in all of my indexes for an "ARIES" or a Deforest 6D411.

I can tell you that in the 1936/37 time frame Canadian manufacturer DeForest-Crosley named their models after astronomical constellations, stars and planets.

Other years they used the names of musicians / composers, or cities, etc. etc.

A 38106 is a .1 mfd @ 200 volt - I'll see if I have the schematic. - for anyone else needing this type of info - you can get pretty much all Canadian radio info through the Canadian Vintage radio society or its members - they have a club schematic service as well.
If you purchase Ed Krausher's cd's - you will obtain scans of the Rogers Majestic 1937-42 service manual - from the schematics and the parts lists you will be able to xref most of the autolite and sprague capacitors.

When I read that email I thought it sounded familiar - I have two of those - I recapped and refinished one but could never get good rf sensitivity - I played with it for awhile and then had to set it aside - since then I acquired another and my intention was to compare the two - but time hasn't allowed for that - I have the service info with schematic - email and I'll send it to you.
This is a unique circuit - hopefully for you it won't need T1 alignment after the recap -you have to break the wax seal and physically move the primary coil.

Thanks. I hope I don't have too much trouble. I have to replace the 1v rectifier (it lests low) also My email is jjwilkie@sasktel.net

I would check the B+ voltages first - if they are OK, no need to replace the rectifier tube.

Test results for rectifiers are often unreliable. Usually, a rectifier is either OK or a dud.
