Rebuilt Radio - Noise
3/16/2011 8:22:23 PMChris
I recently finished a complete rebuild of a Motorola 55x15 AM radio. Every single resistor, capacitor, etc.. has been replaced. Even the silver-mica caps in the IFT cans were cut out and replaced. I haven't yet calibrated it, but I will be soon.

Before I do, I'd like to know if anyone can identify the noise this radio is making, and whether or not it will go away after calibration, or if further repair is needed. It's a buzzing sound that is present through most of the band.

I can only receive 1 or 2 stations at present, and they're usually affected by this buzz. I've included a link to a youtube video with the noise. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Hi Chris

Outside interference which may be from fluorescent lights, computer etc.

Your url comes up as 'unwatchable' as it can only be view via a link from youtube. Check you permission on youtube.

I have the video unlisted but it should be accessible from the link. It checks out okay on my end (with me logged out of youtube). Thanks for looking!

Check the loop antenna for continuity and that it's connected correct. This one must have the return to the AVC line. Or it will buzz and be in-sensitive like it is.

Warren, the antenna checks out for continuity, and it's hooked up exactly as it was before the rebuild. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Change location and see if you experience the same thing. Also see if another AM radio picks up the same interference where you presently hear it.

Chris,
Sounds like the interference I've heard from flourescent lights (60 hz), but could be from a lot of sources. Computers, dimmers.

I set it up in a room away from electronics and the wall. The lights were off (as I'm sure you could tell). I'm starting to wonder if I did something during my repair that could be causing this. I bundled a fair number of the wires together and zip tied them for cleanliness, is crosstalk a possibility?

I beleive Warren had mentioned that any ac carrying wires should be carefully kept away from IF and RF signal wires, could be something to try.
