I have a 17 inch ( ??) Philco Predicta TV that I have been working on and I have no picture. I checked around the neck of the picture tube and I noticed a blue glow. I assume this is a shorted gun assembly.
If so how do I get a replacement pix tube? I also know they are in short supply.
Thanks
Lou

:This guy has done a few tubes for me before. If your tube has not gone to air, it's a good one still to rebuild.

If your tube has a blue glow in the neck (or purple), then the tube has become gassy. The getter might also have turned pale or white, depending on the degree of gassiness.
When the tube is rebuilt, it will be completely exposed to air, but will be re-evacuated once necessary parts are replaced.
If you had a proper vacuum pump, you might be able to restore the tube to proper vacuum yourself, though you must also re-activate the getter and bake the tube at a controlled temperature while it is being evacuated.
Some tubes use a glass seal and some a copper seal. The glass must be melted shut while evacuation is taking place, and the copper must be crimped.
...Better off letting a professional do it. If necessary, he will also put in new phosphors, and can even aluminize the screen if it isn't, already.

I actually have a B and K CRT tester.
Unfortunatgely I have to do a little work on it before I can make it do work!! I will have to check and see if it will test that tube #.
Thanks for the memory jog!
:I restore old radios for my own personal satisfaction and started to "dive" into restoring old tvs from 1946-48 era... I also need a way to test picture tubes so I bough of of E-bay a small compact little tester from the 50s...I replaced two capacitors in it (all it had) and use it to test my CRT..Dam thing works like a charm and tests all...Look on Ebay for CRT testers ..I paid a total of $25 for mine
