hello all...my catacomb in the ar812 unfortunately has a few open coils after lengthy testing...Is there anyone who actually rebuilds these things, or am I dead in the water?

Hi

If it's open audio interstage transformers you can buy replacements that can be made to fit. AES sells audio interstage transformers as part number P-T156.

If RF coils are open may be just end connections. See if you can find broken wires.

Don't know anyone who actually rebuilds these units but many have open coils. Not usually hard to work on once you get it apart.

The whole thing is in real bad shape...a basket case.
The coil wire is very brittle and falling apart. I got it gratis from a antique shop, and it's obviously been very mistreated. The i f coils are the worst.
However now I know the configuration...I get a pristine version I know what to do...and what not.

I have taken a catacomb apart. There are 2 methods of doing this. 1. you can use a heat gun or 2. I used a large canner. I suspended the catacomb in the hot water which I heated up on my barbeque. I suggest you do this outside because the catacomb is resin. Keep track of where all the wires go and once the resin is heated up you can pull the catacomb out of the container. You should cut off and keep the RCA emblems. Once it is out of the container repair the IF leads and put a new audio transformer in. There is a good schematic in Hugo Gernsback's Official Service Radio Manual, page 249, which also shows how to check the catacomb. If you do not have a copy I would be happy to mail one to you.

Also, there is an article in the January, 1993, issue of Antique Radio Classified, pp.24-26 titled Repairing RCA Catacombs by Frank Bock. If you need a copy of this article, I can provide you with one.
