Replacing E caps in an existing multi cap housing?
2/19/2011 8:35:57 PMMitch
Hello all,

I need to change three E caps in a radio. I would like to install the three new caps inside the old multi cap housing. A 10, 30 and 100 MFD are the replacements to fit inside the old housing.

Any and all recommendations are welcome.

Thank you all,

Mitch

You can put the new filter capacitors inside the original can. But this does require removing the can from the chassis. Cutting the bottom, removing all the insides. make up all the new capacitors to fit back inside. This is a lot of work.
What you can do though is leave the can mounted on the chassis. Use the negative can lugs as a tie point for the negative leads of the new filter capacitors. Cut all the positive wires off the old can, connect the wires to the positive ends of the new capacitors. Make this as neat as possible to avoid any shorts.

Warren,

You know this is the Crosley that is on a 72 hour operational test as of the last alignment this evening.

All, there is no room under the chassis for these caps to fit. They will be on top of the chasis either in the old housing or fitted some how as to be looking like a non radio component configuration from the factory. I will agree with what will work the best for the radio.

Agree Warren it would be alot of work, but after you helping me for two months, what is alot of work now, give your expertise on this issue, you know that i have the diligence.

Expecting info from the Forum as well.

There are several ways to do something like this. Send me a picture of the chassis showing the filter can and mounting. If it has a cardboard sleeve over it, that would be a good thing to save for covering the cut original can. You can also be inventive with the use of like a plastic pill bottle about the same size painted silver.
