Are you familiar with Philco 60 cathedral ?

Hi,
I just bought two Philco 60 lately.
$65 each.
It was the first time i see a Philco cathedral.
I searched the web to learn more about them.
I found all the informations i need about all the "runs" that implement changes in the evolution of these early radios.
So i began the cleaning and the recapping.
Then i measured all the resistances before i put the power.

Then i found that the oscillator coil is open.
Apparently all the philco's 60 restorers have the same problem during restoration.

I took off the oscillator coil from the chassis.
The large winding with bigger gauge is ok, but the small one at the bottom was so damaged with green oxide that i have not been able to count the number of turns neither nor to notice the direction of the winding and the wire gauge.

Does someone has some little information about how to rewind that coil ?
-Number of turns
-gauge
-Direction ? from left to right ? bottom to top ?
-Inductance value

I own a digital inductance meter, inductance of the coils would help me too.

Antenna coils in my two sets are not open...yet, but i presume they have some green oxide too on them.

Thanks
Vianney

I rebuilt one of these coils.

As long as you have the number of turns approximately correct you should be OK.

Ok thanks for the very helpfull link.
I rewinded succesfully my OSC coils on both radios. :o)
See pic.

Now after alignment , broadcast band works perfectly.
Shortwave band works also, but i have to put the volume at maximum. :o(
Reception is quite weaker than broadcast.
When i touch the grid plug on the 6A7, volume increase considerably...which often indicate an open antenna coil, no ? or bad matching whatever.

But i checked all the antenna coils. Resitance of winding is equal to schematic.
Band switch short perfectly the right winding.

On broadcast, touching the grid reduce the volume (which i suppose indicate a good matching antenna coils) ?

So i'm thinking about rewinding the SW antenna coil !
They are probably in bad shape too, resistance tested good but may be inductance is not.
What else i could do ?

I will try to unwind carefully to notice the turns etc..

If you find anything about winding of antenna coil on Philco 60, tell me.

Thanks
Vianney

Your antenna coil probably has the Green Dot disease as is common for the Philco.

Scroll about half way down this link to see what can be done.
