Simpson meter different trouble
1/29/2011 8:07:18 AMScott
Appreciate your patience.....original post stated issue with continuity beeper. This still exists but when I went down to measure pins on piezo and then closed case back up the following occurs.
Continuity beeper - no beep.
RX1 zero out now is sporadic, sometimes it will, sometimes it won't, sometimes it starts to but then stutter steps.
RX100 is more reliable on zero out but still sporadically hesitates or does not zero out.
RX10k is fine on zero out.
So since RX1/100 are using same battery(checks good) would a failing resistor behave as described? And is there resistor that would effect both RX1/100 and piezo beeper?

Oh boy......dumb moment. Turned out the negative connection on the 1.5v battery was coming loose. Resoldered and fixed. So back to piezo beeper issue.

I assume this is a digital meter, if not- disregard the rest of this post. However, unless this is some super meter that you're really attached to, you can get a new one for the price of the sounder. I purchased a meter with the usual plus capacitor tester, frequency counter up to 400mhz, diode and amp tester for about $30. It has become my right hand.

No question that Terry is "right on the money". I recently purchased a new VOM as well for $20 on sale, made by CEN-TECH and I really love it.

Money isn't always everything however. Simpson equipment has always had a magical appeal for me and I would try to salvage pretty much anything Simpson made, probably even if that meant a trip to the ATM Machine! Just call me a sentimental spendthrift - LOL!

I have a Triplett analog that I wouldn't trade for anything. It's an FET-VOM. I got it from my boss and I love it. It's like a battery operated ACVTVM. It doesn't have a lot of functions, but it's high impedance and very sensitive. Sometimes ya just gotta see the needle move.

Agree with all. I wouldn't give up my analog meters anytime soon, expecially ammeters for trouble shooting, and by the way, digital meters will drive you nuts when trying to peak IF's. Get so frustrated, sometimes I'd rather just just use my failing hearing to finish the job.
