Need to find somebody to recone 5" speaker
1/25/2011 10:27:11 PMGeorge T
Hi All, can anybody let me know of a good company that recones speakers. Need a name and phone number. I have a 5" speaker for a Tradio LU-6 motel radio, the costumer wants to have it either reconed or replaced. It has a small 1/4" hole in it but he doesn't want a patch job. Thanks Again, George T.

Here's another thought-
There have been some EXCELLENT posts about trying it yourself both here and at ARF. There is also some discussion about what material to use. I use rubber cement and a piece of toilet paper. I've had great success and recently did a major reconstruction.
Either way, good luck.

Thank You Peter for the information will contact him.

and Thank You Terry, I repaired the speaker but this guy is picky so I will have to have it reconed or replace it. It would be easier to have it reconed do the the mounting method they used.

1/28/2011 6:57:11 AMmean no disrespect but
Hank is getting up there in years and I fear that when he is gone there is no one to take his place. He is a gift to our hobby. Are there any other reconers out there who are masters at their craft like Hank?

I have a friend here in Louisville who does re-cones, but as far as I know only Hi-Fi speakers. I just left a message for him to contact me about doing small radio speakers. I'll post as soon as I know something.

I don't really know of others from any personal experience.
.. I've only ever done partial re-cone work myself on most of my speakers.... and that has usually done very well for many many dozens of speakers that I've needed to repair over the last 5 years or so.

I've posted my partial re-cone methods here and at ARF several times.

There have been a few speakers ( three) where the voice coil was really shot or rubbing too bad for me to be able to correct properly.
...and for those three speakers I didn't have new voice coils and so I had to put those speakers in the junk box.

.. but TODAY I decided to dig them out and splurge... and have Hank bring them back from the dead.

Hank replied to my email immediately and told me that for these standard 5" PM speakers I can expect to pay about $38 each plus shipping.

I normally would just sub with a new PM speaker but certain radios need the speaker mount to be of a certain shape to fit inside the radio properly and line up well with the mounting screws. So I decided to have these re-coned.

Now compared to just a few cents for each of the new cones that I've been buying to do my partial re-cone work.. that $38 is a pretty steep price. However I decided to give it a try and have Hank do all three speakers for me. I've always head how great his work was so now I'll get to see it for myself ... even though it's a dear price to have to pay for a working 5" inch PM speaker. (compared to new-style PM speakers for a couple bucks each)

So I went ahead and simply enclosed my check for $130 to cover all repair and shipping.. and sent them out to Hank in Alabama today.

If I knew where to get new voice coils for myself, in a variety of sizes ... perhaps I could have done it all myself. But... On the other hand each speaker frame/basket also has a different depth or angel of pitch/slope to the shape of the cones too... and since I only have one or two style cones here... I'd also soon begin to have problems fitting the cones I have to new voice coils... so unless I find a supplier of all the necessary stuff... I'll just have to let Hank do the tough ones ....and I'll just continue to putter along repairing the ones I can with my partial re-cone method..

Hi, if I get the OK to have the speaker repaired I will be sending it to Hank. A patch would have worked just fine on this speaker but this costumer is really picky. I guess to each their own. LOL Thanks Again, George.
