You must be touching top of the 2nd detector if unable to tune. Like Warren said your hand is acting like an antenna and forcing a strong station through.
Check osc circuit. Pin #3 (pin by itself) on the 27 should be several volts negative.
Measure voltages on the 1st det (24), 35 and 27 tubes. This might give an indication of any problems.

:I've got an AK 84 table radio that was inoperable when I got it. It comes on but there is no sound except for the audio hum and a "pop" when you turn the tuning to the high end of the dial. The filter caps have been replaced along with two of the capacitor blocks and it has not corrected the issue. I tested it with a small AM transmitter that was tuned to 950 KC, when you place it near the chassis and touch the top cap of the 24A tube at the rear of the chassis the signal comes in good and strong but you cannot tune off of it and the volume control has no effect at all. I was wondering if this was an issue with this model and what I should look for to correct it? I would appreciate any suggestions.
