Moldy Knobs
1/3/2011 12:17:06 PMRichard B
I have some radios with a white stuff on them that look like mold. I have tried soaking them in bleach but it does not do much to clean up the knobs. Does any one have any better ideas?

Did you try WD or similar oil? Works on removing lots of old grime...Good Luck

If this is really mold, try Borax hand soap powder. Mix a thick paste, apply and let sit a day. The Boron kills the roots of the mold deep, where bleach only does the surface.

Hi Richard,
I have used OXI Clean on radio knobs with very good results.Mix a fair amount in a pan with very hot water, make sure the knobs are completely covered with the mixed solution and let set for 2 hours.

Try sudsy ammonia. Or the regular stuff (comes in lemon, lavender, plain, etc) and mix with equal part of water then throw in a tiny bit of hand soap. Soak the knobs in this for 15 minutes, and you should see the white stuff just wipe off. It worked on an air conditioner (!) I had years ago. The wife wouldn't touch the knobs until I cleaned them, as well as the rest of the unit. Ammonia works well, and shouldn't cause problems for plastics.

This may not be mold, but an 'out-gassing' or chemical breakdown of the old plastic material.
They didn't have the stable polymers to work with that we enjoy today and never gave a thought about their plastics lasting 50 years or more.
I have to periodically have to wipe down dark colored knobs. The white deposits wipe off easily.
