Fear not, ny friend:
A power transformer it indeed uses, and the original caps were 47 uFd. @ 200 Volts, in one can in series, with two connections on the base, the most negative connnected to the aluminum can. I now have two 50 uFd. @ 400 Volts, small enouth to put both in the old can. So I think I can cut the can open, remove the old guts, install the new caps, and seal it back together, therby keeping the appearance of the original circuity.
I've read about this being done, but never tried it myself, so I'm trying to learn from the mistakes of others.
