Admiral RC 150 to Crosley mod 10-138 Forum Thoughts
12/16/2010 6:02:07 PMMitch
Hello all,

I have a Crosley mod 10-138 that works very well now. I am thinking about purchasing an Admiral mod RC 150 Record Changer to use with the Crosley to play 78 records.
Both items are available to view in resources here.
I have not done anything like this before and before i spend money i would like to have any and all input for anyone that can guide me in the right direction.
I want to give this combo to one of my grand daughters.
Thank you
Mitch

Sir Mitch. . . . .

Since you already have the radio . . . as well as it being a respected old classic . . and it even already having the phono access input built in on it.

As for the changer, I personally never cared for those heavy old kluge / klunker changers as you mentioned.
Opting instead for a Voice Of Music changer mechanism, or else finding the SAME unit under the guise of another manufacturers nameplate . . . . as they were the second sourcing of changers for SEVERAL manufacturers sets.

A couple of hundred years back, I often remember running into consoles with those big heavy turntables with their five pound tone arms that had reached the irrepairable / unreliable state.

I was using one of the VM units that I would fit to a custon cut mounting board and drop it in to replace the
old unit.

Never had any more problems, with the performance / long time reliability, it being a quantum jump upwards, along with there now being a feather touch neeedle weigh imparted to the record surface from the cart/needle.

There are these changers, current on e-bay:

Plus I certainly wouldn't additionally shy away from a like wannabe . . . .:

That Red knobbed and gold bezeled VM unit above, I used to buy new in a box for $17.25 and it having a Sonotone turnover cartridge already mounted in the tone arm.

Sold many, many of those units in my conversions !

Now, one thing that you might be running into in dumping the phono cartridge input into that AC-DC radio is ground loops and resultant . . . . hummmmmmmmm . . . . and the easiest way to fight that is to install an isolation transformer OR adequately power rated back to back filament transformers as the AC supply for the phono unit and then be able to equalizize out the chassis to chassis grounds imbalance between the two units.

Thanks gentlemen,
Warren, I went to Ben's site and gave him a call about the VM turntable. Nice guy. I just bought the VM which is new in the box, Ben guranteed it.

Edd, can you explain a bit more to me and all about the possible hun and reason for a isolation transformer to operate this combo?

Is it possible my grand daughter could get shocked?

Thank you
Mitch

Sir Mitch. . . . .

My information was only relevant to the aspect of your actually experiencing . . . . hummmm.

Initially try out the units and see if any hummm is even a problem, that cannot be easily corrected by the juxtaposition of the units two AC two line cords into the AC line sockets.

Only after that THEN failing, will we worry about needing further isolation of the Vee Emm phono unit.

No shock hazard on the unit is currently presented.
