Hallicrafters chassis ID
12/3/2010 3:47:14 PMJim
I have a Hallicrafters radio with the chassis ID of 70E1045 but I cannot find out what model it is. From the face dial it looks a lot like the S38E but this one uses the octal tubes. If anyone can point me to a cross reference so I can ID the model I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Jim

It's most likely an S-38D.

Hi Jim

There are many versions of S38. Some schematics can be found here:

If non match, what tubes are in your radio?

Be careful working with this series. Use an isolation transformer, and re-cap it first.

This site is all about repair of the S-38 line. Good information about the hot chassis, and how to cure that problem.

Thanks, this is a great site. This winter I'm going to re-do my C. Haven't plugged it in since it knocked me on my bony A$$ a decade or so ago. It's really a scary design.

Want to thank all for your help and suggestions. After many hours of searching, I was able to identify my model as the 5R10A, which is just [as someone else told me] an earlier model of the S38D. With this info I was able to download two different versions of the manual/ Riders & Photofact. Now the fun begins with the refurb.

Thanks again to everyone--

One simple thing to pep this set up, is to use a 12SG7 in place of the 12SK7. A slight touch up on the IF alignment after. Fun little sets to go DXing with.
