Subing 6J7 for 6K7

I have been subing a 6J7 for a 6K7 in my old Silvertone. Although my tube book says its not a substitute, it works fine. Any advantage/disadvantage/harm in doing this?

The 6K7 is a remote cut-off designed for AVC use. The 6J7 is a sharp cut-off, designed to be a straight amplifier. It won't do any damage, but it might cause distortion on strong stations.

:Thanks Lewis for the info. In these TOUGH economic times, been "makin do" with what tubes I have, even building adapters to use what I have rather than order.

I have heard of people getting better performance from their sets by switching to the sharp cut-off tubes, obviously because of extra gain. ...But yes, there is a possibility for distortion and erratic performance.
