Stuck 5Z3 shield on RCA C14 (same chassis as C15-3)

Hello all!I cannot remove the black steel shield that encases the 5Z3 rectifier shield on this chassis.I tried wiggling it,twisting it, and using a heat gun .I don't want to break or distort anything. It seems to have bonded itself to the base.Any ideas on this?Anyone have this same radio??Thanks for info!

Have the RCA C15-3. However on mine it does not have shield installed nor show marks on the shield base as ever having one. Seems it should slip off. Can only suggest some WD40 or similar. Richard

That 5Z3 gets real hot. May try just turning the set on, and let that tube get hot for awhile. Then try pulling it out with an oven mitt. The heat it generates is how it got melted stuck in the first place.

Agree with all.

I assume you have removed the tube/shield from the radio. I can see no harm in a soak in some hot water with a little ammonia for an hour or two. You will lose the decal on the tube if it has one, but you know what it is. If that doesn't work, you could soak in paint thinner in a sealed jar (preferably outdoors overnight.)

Can't think of why anyone would put a metal shield over a glass rectifier tube, but there must have been a reason.

This one is pretty interesting!

:I am wondering if the shield was put in place because the 5Z3 is so close to the large electrolytic caps,so as to keep them from getting too hot??You can see a picture and article of this chassis (radio)at http://www.antiqueradios.com/gallery/v/RCA/C15-3.jpg.html The 5Z3 is in the tall black metal can behind the transformer.

Would think the metal shield would get as hot as the tube does. It may be something to do with flux fields around the large plates.
