Zenith Model 72 and ZE-70 power supply.

Hello,
I have just picked up this radio and was looking for some more information, other than the riders manuals you have here. The ZE-70 power supply looks like it was leaking potting from the huge transformer. I was going to replace the filter caps and the one .1 cap and fire it up, but how do I know if the transformer is not going to be a problem. Once I get the power supply working, I can start on the radio chassis.
Thanks
David

:I was wonder if I could use a battery eliminator to test out the chassis

With the rectifier tube out, you could test run the transformer as is. If you have a vaiac, that would be better. Or the light bulb in serries with the AC input. A battery eliminator would not have enough voltage or current to run the radio itself.

I do have a variac to slowly power it up. If I remove the rectifier tube how do I test to see if the transformer is good. I kind of think that the electorlytics went bad and cooked the transformer some, that is why some of the wax or potting came out. Should I first replace them before testing the transformer?
Thanks

With the rectifier tube out there is no load on the transformer secondaries. You can now take a few voltage readings on the secondary outputs. A light bulb of in series with the AC input will light up bright if by chance the primary of the transformer is shorted. This is a low tech approach. But will give you an indication of the transformers condition.
