Hello all! I just aquired a wonderful RCA C14-1 Globe trotter. It has about 14 tubes mostly metal ones and about 10 coils.Awesome! Anyways one of the IF can shields is missing so if anyone has one of these let me know. These cans are same ones on C15 and many others of that time I believe. They are smooth cylindrical ,about 4 inches tall and about an inch and a half wide with a hole on top and 2 screws. They may be toxic cadmium plated?? I checked with oldradioparts ,butI need to get a camera to take picture which I will later. Can I just make a temporary shield with aluminum foil or a pop can made to shape? I am also wondering why these cans are made of aluminum(non magnetic) instead of steel(magnetic)to absorb the magnetic fields???????

Will a tomato paste can work? Grounded to the chassis.

:The can acts somewhat like a shorted turn some distance from the coil. A steel can has more resistance than aluminum, and will lower the Q of the coil. I have made shields from aluminum soda cans - cut sections to fit with ordinary scizzors. You need something stiff enough not not vibrate mechanically when the radio plays. Shield must be grounded, and at least the coil radius away from the coil. You will need to do an IF alignment. V-8 makes a small aluminum juice can that can make a good shield. Ed M
:Great! Thankyou Gentlemen for the info.
