Rusty Ole GE 202
11/9/2010 5:59:23 AMJesse
I recently purchased a General Electric 202 off of Ebay. This radio chassis is so rusty. The Tuning Gang and all the pulleys are frozen with rust and corrosion. I plan on taking some pics and posting a few so you all can see. Is this radio worth the time and effort to get it to operate again? Have any of you ever had any success in getting Rust off of pulleys, or shafts???? Just curious???

Just takes elbow grease and patience. Try a good light weight penetrating oil. Oil it up and let it sit. A bigger hammer approach rarely works on radios. As far as is it worth the time, for most of us its a hobby and time is not part of the picture.

See the link below about rust removal. Very interesting. I have taken the tuning gang out of radios, boiled the s*hit out of them, and relubed the bearings with a squit of WD40 followed by a tiny bit of bearing grease, and returned them to service. Of course you have to remove the mica from the trimmers and very gently clean them too. The whole thing has to dry for a couple of days before you put it together again. Hope this helps.
