canned electrolytics

Here is my idea for testing/reforming these caps. Since the insulated negative side (lug) of these multiple caps may have 1-2 wires, whereas the positive lugs may have several, including other parts. Removing just the 1-2 from the (-) terminal, effectively removes the whole cap from circuitry for testing. Testing with my Solar CB will verify value and reform if needed. Would save a lot of unsoldering/labor. ANY COMMENTS?

Well, yes & No. The negative end being disconnected would seem now to be open ended. But what if there is a resistor between any of the positive ends? Like the pie circuit common in AC/DC radios. This would give a false reading.

Warren,
In 1 ckt there is a 100k across the terminals of 40ufd. I tested with my lo voltage tester a 22ufd with 100k across. No difference w/wo resistor. This would verify 2 caps in same can w/common ground, and resistor across them. I'm just getting to the cans now, but will test your theory as I progress. Thanks for reply.

Should hopefully be isolated if things haven't gone bad inside. The Solar CB does reform well, as does a lot of other things well including just looking good.

I have occasionally come across a multi-section where I charged one section and found a charge on another section(s), but technically they are supposed to be isolated.

When one section of a multiple can cannot be reformed, it is likely that the other section(s) will soon go as well. Respectfully, I would remove everything from the can, and stuff it with modern components. If done carefully, this will be extremely hard to detect. Alternately, you could mount the replacements "below decks" but do not bridge the originals in the circuit. Up to you.
