Cartridge Type?

Hi!
I've got a 1963 Garrard Type A automatic turntable in a HI-Fi console which I'm trying to figure out. The tuner/amp works quite well. There is very little output from the record player. I happen to have 3 type M5 headshells with all the same cartridge (Acos of Britain model 73-2). One is totally dead and the other 2 are barely putting anything out. When I touch the cartridge wires I get a very loud hum through the speakers. I increased the audio signal from the turntable with an equalizer and got the volume up to a low listening level. Is this a crystal type cartridge? The owners manual says I can use a magnetic cartridge if I install a phono preamp. Does anyone have any experience retrofitting a cartridge on this turntable? Info appreciated. Thanks!

Since you already have two good magnetic cartridges, why not just install a phono preamp. This will give a lot better sound than the ceramic one. An in-line preamp can be found even at radio shack for around $30.00

:Hi! Warren,
I don't have 2 good magnetic cartridges. All three are the same. What I'm wondering is if someone has retrofitted a cartridge to one of these. I'm wondering how much gain the preamp would have to have and what cartridge to use.

From what you are saying you do have two magnetic ones that do put out sound. The original ceramic one puts out more voltage, and does not need a preamp. The magnetic ones do need a preamp, just as said in the manual. The in-line preamp is a common upgrade. It ups the output from the cartridge to the main amplifier.

:Hi! Warren,
I finally got a picture to up load. This is a picture of the cartridge that I'm asking if it is a crystal one. I have 3 of these, with 2 only putting out faint sound. Are you saying to put a preamp on one of these to see what kind of volume I get?

That does look like an old ceramic type. Forget using a preamp with that. You can ether replace it with another ceramic. Or go with a good magnetic cartridge and the preamp.
