I need a needle for my turntable!
10/21/2010 11:18:08 PMScott
I own a Philco 48-1262 turntable with AM Radio (built in 1948).

Where I can I buy a new needle for the turntable? I'd love to play some old 78 rpm records this winter!

Also, it hums really loud while I'm listening to the radio. Does that mean it needs new tubes?

The needle for your phonograph can be found on-line. Remove the cartridge and find the brand and model number on it. Then just google "Phonograph Needles" Enter the infomation about your cartridge. Only thing is I hope your cartridge is still good.
The loud hum from the radio is bad filter capacitors. You can download the schematic from this site. Replace all the old wax paper capacitors too.

to stop the hum install a new electrolytic capacitor:

Scott: I agree with the others. Probably needs new electrolytic caps. They go bad with age and cause humming. I'm surprised that it only hums on radio. Seems like it would hum in the phono position, too, if the caps are bad. Not likely tubes. Start with the most common problem first, the caps. Mark from Kalamazoo

:What kind of needle does it have in it now? Is the cartridge and good. You can determine this by running your finger over the existing needle (if you have one) and you'll hear scratchy sounds through the speaker. If not your cartridge is bad assuming no broken wires. You can purchase an aftermarket cartridge at several places. Very possibly too lite and won't work correctly on 78's. My recommendation is to take the cartridge out and send it to West-Tech Services in Ohio. He rebuilds them and sells needles for them. Then you have an original cartridge and needle.
