use of high Z earpiece as a speaker

I have an Atwater Kent horn speaker without a base. At some point I will hopefully find a base or make something that is large enough that I could put a pm speaker and output transformer in it as means to use the horn with my Stewart Warner model 500 TRF radio.

As an experiment, I hooked up what I believe is one earpiece of a high impedance headset with a DC resistance of about 1100 ohms to the output tube and placed it in the horn. Sounds almost like an authentic horn speaker. Provided it is high impedance is there any problem with this setup? I could likely reduce the output voltage to 90 from 135.

In my experience it's always safe to go from a low impedance to a high impedance. That said, there are some other considerations. Obviously the volume will be lower, and the plate current may be affected. Use ohms law with the plate voltage and the impedance as resistance to calculate the current.
Hope this helps.

I think you might try a line matching transformer, like the ones used to match 500 ohm (70.7 volts) to 4 or 8 ohms in PA systems. Then you could use a high efficiency P.M. speaker. I don't think this would cause any harm.
