Help identify my grandmother's old radio!
10/12/2010 3:27:51 AMYuval
Hi guys/gals,

The enclosed pictures are of my grandmother's (no longer with us) old radio from Israel. The paper sticker specifying the
model number has been lost. The front has an eagle logo with a tuning-indicator and the lettering "SVE", but I
was unable to locate a manufacturer by that name in the galleries here or anywhere else. It may be European made
or American, I really don't know.
I would be grateful for any help in identifying it and
locating a schematic for it.

Thanks for your time,

Hi Yuval,
It looks like you stumped the panel. I have never seen anything like it.

My best guess for age is the 1940's after the war.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

Looking at the images, it looks like someone has replaced the IF transformers. They don't line up with the chassis cut-outs and are shinier than the surrounding metal.
It certainly looks to be a European/Eastern bloc-style set. Can you get the valve manufacturers brand names and the valve types used in the set?
Sometimes these can be cross-referenced to a specific manufacturer and model.
Any brand names on components on or under the chassis?
Can you read what is on that piece of tape on the IF transformer?

Thanks for pitching in.

The model number was on a label inside the cabinet which has disintegrated long ago
I was able to locate a visually identical cabinet on radiomuseum.org
http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/sudverstar_luxussuper_aw61lkt.html
SVE stands for Südverstärker GmbH (SVE), a german
company.
The tubes listed are UCH5*2,UBL3,UY3,UM4
which are a triode-heptode,dual diode-triode, rectifier and a magic-eye tube respectively.

The model of my family's radio might not be the same
one, the internals do seem different from the picture, and joe from wjoe.com (from a few emails i sent around looking for advice) kindly opined that my radio is a later model., maybe early sixties (based on the appearance of the tubes I believe).

I was able to locate a schematic for a philips radio with the exact same set of tube, the Uranus BD396U/A2
and am (very) slowly decoding my way through it now.

I don't have the radio beside me, it found a home with relatives and I offered to try and restore it. I was told at least one of the tubes was manufactured by BOSCH. I'm planning to go and do a thorough inspection in a week or two. I'll post an update when I have more information.

Meanwhile, I'd appreciate any advice on how to:
1) pinpoint the exact model (since there's scant little info on SVE radios out there AFAICT) and locate a schematic for it.
2) assuming I'll need replacement tubes, are there
available replacements for these mixed-function valves ? how do i go about locating suitable substitutes?
