Where to buy crystals
9/28/2010 8:42:28 AMRudy Transfeld
I hope someone can help. A friend who rebuilds crystal cartridges, has run out of supply and cannot find another source ( in Australia ). He prefers to use Barium Titinate Piezo Transducer and if he can buy it in a slab of 1mm thick he could cut it to the size he needs or his preference would be " 15-20 mm long 10mm wide and 1mm thick ". There are many sites on the net with this product but I can't find anyone specifically for cartridges. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Rudy

Sir Rudy . . . . . .

My first thoughts of a first sourcing producer, was Murata or TDK.

And firstest . . . . . I was certainly looking for any surplus floating around, but seems that is not easily to be found.

(With that probably being the source of his declining / declined ? initial sourcing.)

(Sawing up old strain gauge elements . . . transducer elements ?)

And should he have contacts in. . . "Chermany" . . . or Europe, it might be of easier access to him, than over here in this country .

Now if you consult this info, and go down to page 24, one sees where the plate / flat stock has a sizing range which would thoroughly blanket around his mentioned dimensions.

With particular interest in the "soft" 152 mix, suppled with deposited electrode layer facings.

> > > . . . Hot Linking to PZT's . . . < < <

I have certainly had no problems in requesting an engineering evaluation sample of a product, to test and see if it would fully fit my requirements.

With even a variant upon that, in the respect of finding that a manufacturer would be wanting a 5000 unit order, etc.

(Thats EXACTLY why I mentioned the earlier SURPLUS aspect.)

What I have done is mentioned my particular situation of not needing that GREAT of a quantity, and possibly if there was a client that was frequently using that particular unit which I was needing.

I then contacted the end recipient and had a conversation with the purchasing agent, which has at times, ended up in my acquiring my desired lesser quantity of the product from him.

(OR . . .also using a technique which I have coined as "shirt tailing" of an order, in which case if he has to re order on the unit, in that case, he merely adds on the additional extra units which I was needing, onto his new order.)

Dr.EDD,
You're a "Gold Mine" of info, suggestions, and plain old smarts. Even though I didn't ask the question, the supplied info may well be helpful later.

thanks, marv

:Thanks for your reply Edd.
I have e-mailed the company in Germany ( there is a branch in Canada ) and will let you know their reply.
Here is what I sent.

Hello,
I am not sure if you are able to help. I am a restorer of vintage radios and record players. These old players use a crystal
cartridge which fail due to their age and the fact that they comprised of Rochell Salts. A friend restores these cartridges but he can no longer find a supplier for the material he needs. Here is his description : " I need a supply of Barium Titinate Piezo Transducer slab 15-20 mm long - 10mm wide and 1 mm thick which can be used be used to repair old 78 rpm piezo cartridges which took a steel needle."
Are you able to help, and if not, can you suggest who could. I realize that this such a small request but this problem exists world wide amongst vintage radio restorers.

Regards

Rudy Transfeld

Jim to Edd. I think this is a stupid question, but anyway, I have several old CB radio xtals. Is the crystal in them similar to what Rudy wants???

Sir Jim:

Those would be of quartz derivation . . . wrong materiel.

With what little outputting, from mechanical strain, being oriented towards too high of a resonance and at a miniscule output voltage level.

That, as in being compared to the multi hundreds of millivolts on upwards to a volt or so of output that he is seeking.

jim,
I suggest these are mostly quartz resonators (read oscillator) crystals for use in the mega Hertz range, and not suitable for audio pickup (read cartridge) applications. Based on my observations, they are cut in special ways to accurately vibrate at given freqs with applied voltages. Original crystal pickups used something called Rochelle salts mixture, baked into a slab, with much higher output than quartz, when torqued/twisted.
