Paper Capacitors

Hi, I read that all paper capacitors should be replaced in tube radios even before applying the power. I am working on a Meissner 9-1085 and this radio has about 13 paper capacitors. Most of these capacitors have a black band at one end and goes to a grounding point. A guestion I have, I want to replace these paper capacitors with new up to date capactitors and was wondering what type is good for a replacment? Any help I would be most greatful. Thank you for the help in advance.

On the paper capacitors, you can probably just replace them with modern equivalents. The band indicated the outer winding of the foil, but it is no big deal in most cases. Of course, the electrolyics are another matter, polarity must be observed.

I hope this is helpful

Just a reminder to replace the electrolytics that are usually mounted on top of the chasis. They are in a can, either cardboard or meta. These get a little tricky if you do not know electronics, even if you do. Polarity must be observed in these or you will have a bang..As far as the other caps, Orange drops are usually the chosen caps for most. They have longer leads and quality is better. Just radios in canada carries a large assortment of caps.
If you need help on the electrolytics, these guys are great on here.
But if this is your first time and don't know how to read a schematic or mess with these, I would suggest some reading and research before attempting a restoration. Could be fatal....Take care and good luck.
