Zenith G723 - Low Volume
9/19/2010 6:25:39 PMKevin P. Romano
Good Afternoon-

I have a Zenith G723, AM/FM set, that I am really struggling with. The radio was playing absolutely fine - nice and clear and loud. While listening to it the volume dropped by about 90%. Since that time I have re-capped the set and nothing to improve the volume. The only other thing is that once the set is turned on the volume does not get louder or softer by turning the volume control. I have also taken apart the on/off-volume switch and cleaned it thoroughly, but still no volume. It does tune in stations.

Appreciate any help since I am about at the end of my trouble shooting skills.

Thanks-

Kevin

There is a schematic available on this forum for your set. If you are getting stations, you're 90% there already.

Could be the the volume control potentiometer is open, or your bias voltages are wrong due to a bad resistor, or a bad 35b5 output tube, roughly in that order. If your definition of re-capping includes the coupling capacitors, we could probably rule that out.

Anyway, check the voltages in the output section.

My old mentor taught me a simple stupid lesson decades agp : "Start vith the loutschprecher, und work back to the antenna. You vill find ze problem, und den fix it."

Sir Kevin . . . . .

Am I correct in assuming that you probably were listening to FM mode, and that AM is being affected in the VERY same manner . . . in it also merely having 10% volume capability ?

If the mentioned plate and screen voltages on the AF output and 'T8 tubes were up to normal . . . try this one.

Take a 1K resistor and a test lead with clips at both ends.

One clip lead end goes to the resistor the other clip lead end goes to the B- buss.

Power up the set and place its tuning off from having any station being received.

Brush that free resistor lead across the plate connector pin of the AF output tube . . . a quick lateral striking motion . . akin to the striking of a match.

Did the speaker respond with a burst of static ?

If so, move to the plate of the 19T8's triode and do the same action , but expect a much louder burst this time.

If positive on both tests, we then need to be concentrating on the 1st grid---volume control--- FM/AM detector stage circuitry.

Standing by . . . .
