Anyway- It'd be nice to have some more information to answer your question, like is there a switch involved? Sometimes the audio is fed through a Radio/Phono switch. Often this switch is an integral part of the tone arm. It's activated when you move the tone arm from the rest position. In this case, yeah, the phono section would have to be plugged in.
Keep us posted.

This set has a radio/phono switch. In the radio posistion it does not need the phono at all. In the phono posistion, you should get a loud hum if you touch the audio input center conductor.
