Engine paint for tubes?

I want to paint the black metal tubes to spiff up a radio. Because of the heat should I be using either engine or BBQ grill paint?

Would depend on the tube type. A metal audio output tube would get hotter than say a 12SK7. Normal spray paint for receiving tubes. High temperature paint for Audio output tubes. The tube number is usually stamped on the bottom of the tube skirt.

One word of caution.

Make sure that the paint that you use has no metallic particles or conductive material in it before you use it. If you get this on any of the tube pins, bye bye tube.

Agree with all. Just make sure the tube type is still visible on the base stamping. Steel wool off the rust or blemishes on the tube first, and tape up the pins very well.

Of course, the authenticity, date, and brand will be forever removed, and that will diminish the tube's value considerably. But on the other hand, you can paint them all red, or brown, or whatever you want to make your project eye catching. Please, black or dark brown on all hot running tubes, for proper heat dissipation. Enjoy.

And the tube itself dosen't give a damn whether it is rusty, paint flaking off outside, barnicles, etc...
