Greetings,
I want to buy a crystal radio set or an electronics experimenter set or something like that for a 12 year old boy I know.
Can anyone advise me or direct me to something good but introductory for him. I see lots of junk out there but some of you guru's must know of something worth the money and good for learning.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

Years ago when my youngest was that age, got a "Electronic Projects Kit" from the Shak. Had a 150 page manual with 300 digital/analog projects, instructions, and basic theory of operation for each. He didn't take to electronics, and ended up flying F-18's for a while. It was all solid state stuff resistors, caps, transistors, diodes, IC's and LED's. Think the Shak still carries something similar. If you haven't noticed, there is a wealth of web info on crystal sets by just Googling it.

Google a site called "Scitoys" (or something close) They have a bunch of educational stuff at great prices.

Search eBay. I bought two kits sold originally by Radio-Shack in the early 80ies. One is a simple crystal set the other a more elaborate solid-state kit. Both cost me below 10$ each + shipping.
